A visit to our prize draw winner! Highworth Grammar School
On Thursday December 8 we paid a visit to the first of our Education People Show prize draw winners, Highworth Grammar School in Ashford, to deliver their new compost bin!
Joined by Sylvie McCutcheon, leader of the student Eco Club, Sue Sharp who tends the on-site greenhouse, and prize winner Cheryl Kuit, we were given a quick tour of their outdoor spaces, and a first-hand look at some of the incredible environmental initiatives happening at the school.
From learning to grow and harvest, to educating the students on the lifecycles of bugs, Highworth have utilised the school’s outdoor spaces to make them just as educational as the classrooms within. Their on-site greenhouse is open to all students, allowing them the opportunity to experience horticulture, and to propagate and grow several species all year round. This year students even grew their own flowers which they gifted to parents on Mother’s Day.
Their fantastic bug hotel is the perfect environment to learn about the ecosystem and the lifecycle of bugs. It is next to this four-star hotel that their new compost bin has been positioned, giving their creepy crawly residents a place to eat!
We also visited their ten young trees, planted in memory of the late Queen Elizabeth ll, which the school will be nurturing over the coming years.
A huge thank you to Cheryl, Sylvie and Sue for showing us their excellent school and the projects they have been working on. We look forward to catching up with Highworth in the new year!
