Soft Landscaping

Shrubbery and Hedges Trimming Service.

Hedges and shrubbery are a practical and greener alternative to fencing. They offer protection from the elements and prying eyes whilst still giving a natural feel, providing habitats and hiding places for local wildlife.

However, unlike fences they do require regular upkeep, particularly in the summer, and with consideration to insect damage and disease.

Regular pruning can improve the health of your hedges and encourage them to grow thicker and more consistent with your desired shape. Trimming also stimulates the growth of longer stems and larger blooms for those flowering shrubs and hedges. Our professional hedge trimming and shrub maintenance services can transform your property into a stunning, secure landscape that will leave a lasting impression. Please be aware that hedges cannot be cut between late March and August, to ensure we are not disturbing the bird nesting season.

Types of shrubbery and hedges we trim and prune

Simply put, a hedge is the name given to a group of shrubs planted closely to create a ‘natural barrier’, perhaps for shade, privacy or to be used as a boundary. Whether you’re caring for a shrub or a hedge, both will often fit into two categories of plant, evergreen or deciduous;

Evergreen plants benefit from a green, leafy look all year round. Often used for box hedges, evergreen hedges serve the purpose of offering a boundary or wall, blocking out noise or unwanted views, whilst also still looking lush throughout the year.

Deciduous plants are seasonal bloomers. Unlike evergreens which keep their foliage during the winter months, deciduous plants can act as a filter to minimise damage from strong winds or snow, and are notoriously hardy.

Both evergreen and deciduous plants are excellent options for your hedge borders or shrubbery. Whilst both look very different and require different maintenance and care packages – particularly for younger trees and plants – they will equally offer a variety of environmental and commercial benefits;

  • Lower noise pollution
  • Offering security and privacy for your property
  • A protective space for wildlife and birds to nest
  • Offering shelter and food for wildlife
  • A natural look in keeping with their outdoor surroundings
  • Shelter from strong winds, snow and adverse weather conditions

Our hedge cutting services are tailored to meet the needs of our customers. Regardless of the hedges and shrubbery you have or aspire to have, we’ll work alongside you to decide a care package to fit your requirements.

When should you trim and prune your hedges?

Hedge and bush trimming are essential maintenance practices for keeping your greenery looking tidy and neat. However, timing is key to ensure maintenance is undertaken at the right time, so that it doesn't harm the health of the shrub.

Generally, it is recommended to trim and prune your shrubbery plants twice yearly as a minimum, to maintain their shape and health and encourage a thicker, denser foliage. However, it is important to recognise that all plant types may require different care depending on its growth rate and location; our free site visit will allow you to tailor a package to the requirements of your plants.

The best time to trim hedges and bushes is during their dormant period, which is typically in late winter or early spring, and we will often recommend a cut either side of this period to maintain a uniform and healthy look all year round. Trimming during this period allows for the removal of any dead, diseased or damaged wood, and promotes healthy growth. Younger, growing plants will require a much more frequent timetable of care, to allow for regular shaping, trimming and watering to train your plants into the desired shape. It is important to remember that hedges should not be cut between late March and August to avoid disturbing the nesting season of birds.
