National Apprenticeship Week with Flynn!
This week is National Apprenticeship Week, and in the sprit of the occasion we caught up with Grounds Maintenance Operative Apprentice, Flynn!
Landscape Services currently employ two excellent, hardworking apprentices, Bailey and Flynn, and both are wonderful editions to our frontline workforce, supporting two of our largest contracts.
As of today, Bailey is based in Maidstone alongside experienced Contracts Manager James Wood, who joined Landscape Services as an apprentice himself. Flynn spends a lot of her working week in Tonbridge, shadowing Alan who has been with us for 30+ years and offers a wealth of knowledge for anyone to learn from.
Flynn; I joined the business in June 2025, as part of my Level 2 Horticulture course for Hadlow College. Spending time with different members of the team has allowed me to learn first hand, and I’ve gained a lot of specialised knowledge in a short space of time.
Flynn’s passion and willingness to learn has meant that despite having been with us less than a year, she is now confidently able to work independently on certain tasks on which she has been trained.
In fact, Flynn has a number of services under her belt…
‘I’ve been here for eight months and in that time I’ve learned grass cutting, hedge cutting, line marking, and gained a lot of confidence in other areas too’
Supporting apprenticeship schemes in any industry is important, but for one like ours, skillsets and experience built up over time are invaluable. By passing on some of our long-standing employee’s knowledge, we’re supporting recruitment for the next generation in grounds maintenance.
With an ‘earn as you learn’ approach, many young people like Flynn find apprenticeship schemes appealing. But why grounds maintenance?
'I chose grounds maintenance because I love to work outside and take care of community spaces. It’s also improves my mental and physical health.'
So, what’s next? Over the coming months, Flynn will continue to build on her skills and knowledge, progressing through training on a wider range of specialised equipment.
'After I complete my apprenticeship, I plan to stay with the business and continue to learn more about horticulture and machinery.'
A huge thank you to Flynn for sharing her experience, as well as the brilliant teams that support her, and Bailey, through their journey with us.
