Robot linemarkers - The run down
A robotic line marker (robo line marker) is an automated GPS-guided machine used to autonomously mark and remark lines for sports pitches - without the need for operator intervention once programmed. The ‘bot’ operates via a GPS and internet connection, often through an accompanying tablet, which enables operators to adjust individual pitch lines and preview the layout before marking the field.
Man vs machine – what are the benefits of robotic line markers?
Robotic line-markers offer several benefits to both the user and the business in terms of efficiency and productivity, with the main three being;
Quick, autonomous working
Unlike man-operated line markers, robo line markers can work almost fully autonomously, freeing operators to focus on other on-site tasks. At times, particularly in locations with multiple sports pitches, line marking by hand can take days – a task that robo line markers can significantly speed up.
Precise and accurate marking
Our team often mark pitches in all weather conditions, and naturally there are imperfections – particularly when marking out on marshy turf. This is why the robo line markers are such impressive coworkers, with the ability to deliver precise pitch lines with consistent paint distribution, regardless of external conditions (within reason!).
Cost effective solution
Robo line markers create precise lines, which are achieved through perfectly even paint distribution. This vastly reduces the likelihood of paint loss, and frequency of refills, in turn saving both cost of paint and time. Additionally, the superior quality of our line-marking paint combined with the controlled intensity of robo line marker lines allows for extended intervals between pitch remarking, enabling us to undertake more projects for our customers.
Robotic line markers in action
Landscape Services are continuously working on our journey to stay as sustainable as possible throughout the business. One of the ways we do this is building and maintaining strong relationships with our suppliers, and always seeking new equipment demos for sustainable alternatives. We recently trialled two robo line markers, both with excellent results;
The Tiny Mobile Robot TMR Pro X is a lightweight machine (weighing 35kg), which allows it to mark out pitches swiftly and tackle different terrains or weather conditions. Its design is manageable for the operator, whether that’s ongoing maintenance or cleaning, with features like exposed, large, and easily accessible wheels.
Our demo with Origin Amenity Solutions featured two of the TMR Pro X. These versatile robots prove themselves to be an efficient, independent tool delivering quality results, and operate wholly from a dedicated tablet and in-built GPS. Controlled exclusively via a dedicated tablet and equipped with advanced GPS, the bot impressed the team with its technology and ability to maintain speed and precision across different terrains.
Whilst similar to the TMR Pro X in pitch quality and service, the Turf Tank 2.0 has slightly contrasting features that make it effective in different ways. One key difference is its hard-shell casing, which protects the machine in more challenging weather conditions. The bot includes a free plotting app with built-in safety features and a GPS base station for marking pitches with a stable, consistent signal.
Our test team particularly admired the safety features of this robo line marker, which they were able to witness in-person when demoed by the Turf Tank sales team. When encountering obstacles, such as a person or an obstruction, the Turf Tank immediately halts to ensure surrounding safety while maintaining perfectly straight lines. It also alerts the handler for prompt action.
Innovation and sustainability are at the core of our business philosophy. By partnering with suppliers and enhancing our fleet, we aim to reduce environmental impact and water usage. Robotic line markers contribute significantly to these goals, consuming less paint and maximising efficiency when paired with our latest line-marking paints.
Autonomous robotic line markers represent the industry's cutting edge, utilising advanced GPS technology to redefine line marking practices. The TMR Pro X and Turf Tank 2.0 are just the beginning of our investments in autonomy and AI—stay tuned for more developments in the near future!
